New-Firm Survival: Industry versus Firm Effects
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recent studies show that the likelihood of survival differs significantly across firms. Both firm and industry characteristics are hypothesized to account for this heterogenity. Using a longitudinal database of manufacturing firms we investigate whether firm or industry characteristics dominate. Our evidence suggests that both firmand industryspecific characteristics shape new-firm survival during the first years subsequent to entry. However, in the longer run, most of the industry factors have little influence on the likelihood of survival, but firm-specific characteristics still exert a considerable influence in shaping firm survival rates. However, these studies have focused on developed countries and little attention has been devoted to developing countries. Using the variable of number of employees as a measure of firm size, this paper investigates the shape of firm size distribution in the food & beverages i...
متن کاملFirm Specific Risk and Return: Quantile Regression Application
The present study aims at investigating the relationship between firm specific risk and stock return using cross-sectional quantile regression. In order to study the power of firm specific risk in explaining cross-sectional return, a combination of Fama-Macbeth (1973) model and quantile regression is used. To this aim, a sample of 270 firms listed in Tehran Stock Exchange during 1999-2010 was i...

Recent studies in urban and regional economics suggest th...

متن کاملTechnological Discontinuities and Complementary Assets: A Longitudinal Study of Industry and Firm Performance
We suggest that the type of complementary assets (generic versus specialized) needed to commercialize a new technology is critical in determining the industryand firm-level performance implications of a competence-destroying technological discontinuity. At the industry level, we hypothesize that incumbent industry performance declines if the new technology can be commercialized through generic ...
